Bulk candy vending, which dates back to the late 19th century, is nonetheless a modern growth industry with significant sales growth over the last decade. The reason for this growth is consumer demand for ready access to cheaply priced products. Additionally, this type of business is a good fit for new business owners as the initial investment is relatively low and it offers the possibility of high returns.
The bulk candy vending business can be profitable. The principal initial investment is the cost of acquiring a vending machine or machines to be placed at convenient consumer venues such as grocery stores, shopping malls, etc. The vending machine itself is a simplistic mechanical device, which upon insertion of a coin dispenses to the consumer a quantity of candy, such as a gumball, a hand full of M&Ms or perhaps a small toy. A plus with this type of business is that bulk candy vending machines are relatively inexpensive when compared to other kinds of vending machines, including soda and snack machines, as they are mechanically simpler and lack refrigeration equipment or an electrical supply to operate.
Additionally, in the case of bulk candy vending, an opportunity exists for significant profit as the return on sales tends to be high. For example, gumballs can be routinely bulk purchased for two cents apiece and can be dispensed from a vending machine for a payment of $.25 by the purchaser. An added cost reduction is the fact that vending machine bulk sales are exempt from sales tax in many states.
Another advantage is that bulk candy vending inventory items are relatively nonperishable, a factor which tends to reduce the time and labor required to operate a vending business. Less replacement and monitoring of stock in the machines is necessary.
Bulk candy vending can be a manageable supplemental income business for someone otherwise engaged in full time employment, more so than soft drink and snack food vending. This is due to the fact that good locations for bulk candy vending machines, including grocery stores, drug stores and shopping malls, typically are assessable during the evenings and weekends for tending to the machines whereas soft drink and snack food vending machines are more commonly located in office buildings with limited access on evenings and weekends.
Another good method exists for vending business owners to cut operating costs. Although suitable locations tend to charge a fee for machine placement, if the operator agrees to donate, a portion of the vending receipts to a charitable cause frequently the fee will be waived. Bear in mind that return on sales in vending tends to be high thus facilitating donation of a portion of the proceeds while still providing a good return to the vendor/operator.
