Some True Blue Aussie Christmas Traditions

Christmas must be my favorite time of the year.
I bear in mind my white Christmases in Europe as somewhat girl. There was the smell of cinnamon, nutmeg and gingerbread biscuits, and my mother and father ingesting eggnog as we adorned our tree.
Snow glistened outdoors and groups of kids with their lanterns alight might be heard singing Christmas Carols as they moved from house to accommodate in alternate for goodies and sweets that residents would throw out their window. That’s when the mad scramble started attempting to look for sweets in a number of toes of snow.
I typically yearn for those magical, mystical years and reminisce particularly once I listen to Bing Crosby’s “I’m Dreaming of a White Christmas”.
Our means of compensating for the dearth of cold climate in December is by having Christmas in July celebrations with all the trimmings together with weather close to that of the northern hemisphere (properly nearly – anything north of the Tropic of Capricorn hasn’t been included, sorry).
In Australia many people nonetheless write cards with snow and ice scenes, people ice-skating on frozen lakes and footage of cute reindeers. Not only would Santa melt from the warmth sporting his pink winter woolies, his reindeer would die of heat exhaustion working in such sweltering heat!
No reindeers and sleighs for us – we’ve ‘six white boomers’ (boomers: massive kangaroos) because of a song by Rolf Harris from the ‘60’s. I’ve seen our Santa pulling a surfboard sporting sunscreen, board shorts and hat, zipping through the southern skies. Sure – he’s our man!
A far cry from the drunk Santa I bear in mind driving at the back of a ute (ute: utility automobile) within the nation a few years ago. Last seen swigging on a protracted neck (long neck: tall bottle of beer) attempting to articulate “ho ho ho and a Merry Christmas to all” because the ute slowly drove down every street in my neighborhood.
Carols by Candlelight are a practice ‘down under’ throughout the weeks main as much as Christmas at many venues round cities and cities of Australia.
Christmas lunch right here in this nice southern land is a unique experience. As Christmas Day closes within the temperature continues to rise as does the humidity right here in Brisbane. You realize Christmas is here while you begin listening to the continuous shrill sounds of cicadas (massive winged insect) on sizzling, cloudless days.
I know many still insist on cooking the turkey, other roasts as well as roast greens and gravy in the stifling warmth (I did till not too long ago), as well as fruitcake and custard. Not everybody has air conditioning right here so a cool breeze is commonly prime of the wish list.
So what is a traditional Christmas lunch down this fashion?
1. Prawns (prawn: shrimp) for the barbecue – on ice and with lemon wedges;
2. Recent Fish from the market – arrive very early (in the event you’ve never had this expertise before you’ll know what I mean when you do);

With lunch completed, we stay up for our the nice custom of spending Boxing Day watching the start of the Sydney to Hobart yacht race, The Boxing Day Test cricket at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), or by spending the day lazing at home or spending it down the beach.
Having been outdoors as soon as at present, I’m very conscious of how sizzling and humid it is and apparently it’s not going to get cooler any time soon. In order I sit right here looking at the cloudless sky and writing this text, I’m indeed “Dreaming of a white Christmas, if solely in my goals!”
