Beer pong products are big business in the twenty-first century. Beer pong was once a game simply relegated to fraternity house basements, backyard barbeques, and parking lots at rowdy sporting events. It shouldn’t be surprising at all that many enterprising young men (and women) sick of the daily grind behind a desk took to heart the age old adage that if you find a way to get paid for doing something you love, then you’ll never have to work a day in your life. Many of these young people did exactly that when they ditched staring at a computer screen all day to take their shot at finding their fortune by merchandising a game they already dearly loved, namely beer pong.
The current economic climate is not the first time that we’ve seen alcohol sales increase as unemployment dips – it’s just the most recent. Historically speaking Americans have shown time and again that when the going gets tough having a cold drink can be a temporary fix for troubling issues. Fortunately as is the American standard, necessity has once again served as the mother of invention in the form of a free market doing what it does best: finding opportunity in times of hardship.
You need look no further than the myriad of beer pong products that are available for sale both online and in bricks and mortar retail stores to see that some resourceful entrepreneurs are turning lemons into lemonade (or at least squeezing as hard as they can to make it happen).
Among the many products being sold the most high end, visible, and expensive are custom beer pong tables. Roughly the size of traditional ping pong tables some of these items are built with a degree of craftsmanship that would impress any skilled carpenter. These items are marketed as being specially prepared for beer pong with strategically painted or carved slots for the traditional red solo cups to fit into on each side. Many of these table have ping pong ball holders built into each side and numerous other features that while far from necessary are marketed as must haves for anyone looking to show off how serious they take their beer pong. Customized logos are only the beginning.
Custom rules sheets tailor made to accommodate official beer pong rules can be purchased and proudly displayed in any game room on the planet. Numerous other similar accessories sprinkle the marketplace.
Despite all of the customization, fancy accessories, and bells and whistles most players truly prefer the rugged old school style of throwing a few cups on a propped up board and making a night of enjoying some cold beers with some good friends with no concern at all for the frills that the expensive tables and accessories have to offer. For reasons best understood by getting to know the beer pong players themselves the answer to why they prefer the make shift models that are often the result of creative inspirations is really surprisingly simple. Beer pong is a common man’s game that despite its youthful collegiate association is now being played by men and women of all ages and somewhat surprisingly for many casual observers even as these more mature players’ bank accounts grow their interest in abandoning the roots of the game they hold so dear never materializes.
Only time will tell if beer pong and all of the products that have sprung up to capitalize on its popularity are here to stay or if they will simply be another passing fad in the American landscape. The one thing we can say with the utmost level of certainty is that as long as beer pong is popular there will be innovative young minds devising beer pong products which they hope will springboard them to financial success while working on projects that they truly feel passionate about.
