do egg cartons work to soundproof a room drums?
ok I play the drums and i have them in the basement (unfinished all concrete) and I need to reduce the amount of noise upistairs. Do egg cartons work. If you guys have any other suggestions please tell me. I need it to be cheap too
Egg crates don’t soundproof a room. Their purpose is to stop reflection of sound off walls. Hard walls make sounds bounce back and forth around the room, which make sound muddy. You don’t notice it as much with your ears because our brains are able to ‘decode’ reflections. But on a recording it’s really amazing the change they make. (Recording studios use heavy curtains all around, or even acoustical tile, but egg crates work surprisingly well and are very cheap).
But they don’t muffle sounds beyond the walls, so the drums are still just as loud in the next room or across the street.
I was involved with taiko drumming for a while. One of the most famous taiko groups is in San Jose, CA. They practice in an area of San Jose called Japantown, a relatively dense, crowded urban area. I saw a film of them practicing in their dojo, and they had covers on the drums to muffle them. They were quieter, I mean you could still hear them in the room but not as much outside. I didn’t see the covers close-up, just in the film, but they looked like they were made of thick material, like a blanket would be made of. They were form-fitted like a bottom bedsheet, to cover the top and sides of the drums, and had an opening in the middle so the drumsticks actually struck the drumhead.
I don’t know if anyone uses these with regular drums, or even if someone makes them and you can buy them somewhere, but it would be easy enough to make a set to try,
I’ve always wondered how drummers practice in a house or garage or basement without the whole neighborhood continuously calling the police to complain. 8^) When I lived in San Francisco, years ago, there was a guy who would stand out in a huge field in Golden Gate Park playing the bagpipes for an hour or two a day, because he lived in an apartment building and his neighbors (and his wife) wouldn’t let him practice at home.
