Workwear – When Do You Need It? by Jeff JKL
If you browse through any catalogue of Corporate Clothing for workwear the supplier will probably have over a dozen categories for mainstream occupations that require protective clothing or PPE. Occupations immediately brought to mind that might require workwear include: chefs and caterers, bar workers, beauticians, hairdressers, health professionals, construction workers, hauliers, built-environment professionals, mechanics, laboratory technicians, rail workers and many more who provide those type of services within a company that isn’t necessarily associated with those industries per se. For example, cleaning staff that are not employed through an outside agency or a caretaker responsible for building maintenance may be part of your insurance company or law firm, and neither of those enterprises would ordinarily demand the need for workwear in the usual execution of their duties.
Apart from PPE (Personal Protective Equipment), workwear may be any item of dress worn to your place of work as opposed to high street fashion or designer threads. Quite often an employer may provide workwear as part of the corporate clothing so that the image of the company is unified from the car park to the boardroom by use of colours or logos to coordinate the employees’ appearance. Workwear may include shirts, T-shirts, polo shirts; sweat shirts, tool vests, fleeces, hoodies and body warmers or tabards or jackets for the upper body and trousers, shorts, coveralls, overall, dungarees, one-pieces, bibs and braces, kneepads and belts. For more specialist areas of work that require eye protection, goggle and safety glasses would be prerequisite workwear and anywhere you staff are exposed to traffic in poor daylight or at night in the course of their regular duties high visibility is essential. Whether on a construction site, on a runway or in a car park, workers need to be seen so Hi Viz clothing is essential. Most high visibility clothing in the UK is made in fluorescent orange or yellow but other countries also have blue and green as popular colours in their range. Not only does the bright vibrancy of the fluorescent colour stand out but the reflective tape used on shoulders, backs, yokes and sleeves on jackets, vests, shirts and coats offer high visibility and on trousers or other legwear, reflective bands on the thighs make sure they stand out too.
In the kitchen chefs require jackets, trousers, skullcaps or scarves and aprons. These are not items you can find easily in the high street (if at all) and they do not feature in DIY stores that sometimes carry limited lines in hi viz clothing. In your company restaurant you staff will need to have protective aprons with or without pockets, clip on safety-ties perhaps (ideal for avoiding accidents that might cause an employee to get pulled into something dangerous if their tie gets caught in machinery or is in the presence of open flames such as a gas ring in the kitchen) and smart co-ordinated apparel for serving in the bar or lounge.
Even if you only have a small business and do your own housekeeping you might want to provide appropriate aprons or coveralls for staff doing cleaning duties and you may wish to create an identity through a ‘uniform’ for your staff to wear when they are front of house too.
