The Red Narra (Pterocarpus indicus) is found in several parts of Asia (Thailand, Burma, Indonesia, Vietnam, etc) and northern Australasia; It is the national tree of the Philippines. It comes from the Pea Family (Fabacea or Leguminosae). It is also known by many different names in different parts of the globe: Asana, Burmese Rosewood, Kaibocca Wood, Tnug, Sonokembang, Sena, Angsana, Andaman Redwood, etc, are some of the more common names.
The absolutely exquisite Amboyna Burl also comes from the same tree. The height of the tree is about 40 m. and the width of the trunk spans some 2 m. All around the tree, you will on many occasions find buttresses extending outwardly and upwards. It is a very hard, dense, and heavy wood.
In some places, the hardwood could exhibit a purple color but mostly it is colored a reddish orange, rose, or reddish tan. At different angles, when held up to light, a piece of this wood reveals a marked change in appearance. When you submerge this wood in water, it turns a lovely opalescent color; this is due to a substance that is said to naturally occur in the wood cells.
Red Narra Wood is best for wood inlay work as it has a rich color and the ability to take a high level of polishing, and the grain and beautiful colors are quite unmatched by any other timber.
