Safety Vests Imply To America Neon Hues Are Preferred For Safety
Those bright neon green and orange vests have undoubtedly been seen as you drive by schools, construction sites or at the occasional fender bender. safety vests made their appearance as they became a statement for safe drivers to be cautious around road workers. Their fluorescent and reflective appearance is designed for anyone to see, especially on the roads and highways.
Hunters don the blaze orange color by law today when hunting game in the woods on their orange t-shirt. These sportsmen are easily seen by other hunters in the same vicinity that might mistake their movements for those of a deer or other large game. In fact the hunters were very concerned the bright orange apparel would hinder the sport they enjoy. Some researchers began a study to determine the colors that deer could see. It turns out deer cannot detect the neon orange and in fact, they are more likely to spot the hunter by scent and movement.
People walking, running, cycling and hiking also wear the neon gear. The sports have become safer as the visibility of the enthusiasts alert drivers on roads and highways of their presence. Marathons and bike races around the country have joined the nation to protect their participants in annual events.
In 2008, a Federal regulatory act required media personnel, who are on rights-of-way belonging to the federal government, to wear the protective and bright colored vests. Many states have also followed suit and require the brightly colored clothing article for media and workers on their state roads as well. The regulation is late in coming to the media workers but it must have been successful enough to prompt their inclusion.
Proof for the value of the safety vest is found in its use for Police Officers. The number of Policemen killed by firearms was the most devastating statistic. In 2009, that changed for on duty Police Officers. Three-thousand of America’s finest were saved by wearing the specially designed protective vest colored blue with retro-reflectors.
In American cities the paramedics, school crossing guards, highway workers, and construction site employees are all identified with colors that have strong visibility. The people being protected by the neon orange, yellow, and green include everyday workers and young children as they cross the roads to school. Marketing masterminds did not need to create a campaign to alert drivers to heed the neon gear. Drivers became more aware as the colors were always displayed with signs carried or posted by workers around highways. The lesson was innately learned to be “alert” and “cautious.”
The color of the neon vest is determined by its owner’s exposure to slow traffic and this requires a Class One vest which is approved for low visibility. Class Two visibilities are at an intermediate level for workers who are exposed to traffic traveling 25 miles per hour or less. Finally, Class Three vests are used by road workers who need the most visibility while working on the country’s federal and state highways.
In conclusion, safety vest and orange t-shirt are seen most often on highways where federal and state workers need to alert drivers of their presence. The intensity of the green, yellow and orange neon colors alert hunters of others in the woods and drivers on the highways of cyclists, runners, and hikers. The retro-reflectors and bright neon colors cue drivers to be alert and this saves lives.
