Review of the Victorinox Spartan Multi-tool by David Denholm
Victorinox are the makers of the infamous Swiss army knives they are known in the English speaking world. They were originally formed in 1880 and for over 100 years have become the go to Multitool for any outdoor pursuits.
During the later part of the 21st Century Victorinox (incidentally named after the founder’s mother and a mixture of the word inox which means stainless steel) developed a green ethical approach to business. They were influenced heavily from the film made by Al Gore an inconvenient truth. To this end Victorinox have made sure that 120 apartments beside their factory are heated by the waste energy of the factory itself. No crude oil is used to heat the factory or the apartments. Many of the waste by products of production of the tools themselves are recycled. It also has a closed water loop system which accounts for 92% of all the heating requirements for the apartment and the factory itself.
Victorinox are a very quality conscious brand and in having this quality consciousness have also developed a 4 stage process to help with this goal. The first is that they have a careful inspection process of all materials that arrive into the factory. Quality material means that at the outset quality can be built into the product. Some products use OEM parts and these too go through a similar process of inspection before they can make it onto the assembly line. Whilst on the shop floor every individual item goes through many other quality processes to make sure that during assembly Victorinox’s high quality standards are adhered to. Finally upon completion strict quality control processes are followed in the factory to ensure right to the last detail each tool is made with quality in mind.
Some key dates in the evolution of the Victorinox brand;
In 1921 stainless steel was just invented and as it was also known as inox the founder of Victorinox married this with his mother’s name to create the brand name Victorinox
In 1969 Victorinox started to make kitchen knives for the home
In 1989 they launched the Swiss Army Watch in the US.
In 2008 the opened their first flagship store in London’s Bond Street.
And now to the Spartan which is designed around the original Swiss Army Knife of 1887. It is this very fact that makes it one of the most popular in the range. It is also seen as a budget knife for someone wanting to get started with a Victorinox knife as it has lots of tools but not as many or it’s not as heavy as some other models. However, the quality is not compromised on this model or any others in the Victorinox range. The tin opener is well known in the Victorinox range to be very effective and better than other brands even twice or three times the price. The wire cutter cap lifter and stripper are all on one tool which helps keep the weight down to 60g which is amazing for such a versatile tool.
