The Libbey glass Company has a long and established history. It was started in the first half on the nineteenth century in Massachusetts as the New England Glass Company. The original firm was bought out in 1878 by William Libbey and renamed. Due to the increased competition in this industry, the company shifted its base after ten years to Ohio. If we examine the industry today, we see that Libbey are still very much the pioneers and a large driving force. Alongside their cut glass designs, they also manufacture windows, containers, bottles, and a huge variety of drinks vessels. Libbey first started mass producing products a century ago, in part due to the skills of the inventor Michael Owens. It was he who designed a machine that can be used to automatically manufacture a range of desirable products.
The age of automation helped to boost profits for the company. As manufacturing costs and the number of employees required were brought down, production and turnover actually increased. The company was believed to be the first to come out with a heat treating process that allowed for glassware to become incredibly strong and durable. They have actually been at the forefront of innovation across a number of industries.
As the automobile became a mass produced item in the first part of the twentieth century, the demand for shatterproof windshields grew exponentially. Libbey became the country’s top producer of windshields. It was in part for this reason that Ohio developed a name as the glass capital of the country.
