First things first. What’s a rock garden?
It’s a place where you grow healthy plants that might not flourish elsewhere – a place that exudes harmony – it’s natural yet the naturalistic beauty is in the eye of the beholder. It’s different heights, earthy colors, soft and rugged textures merging together to create a peaceful feeling.
You find them in the mountains, near streams, in your front yard and even near your pool. You’ll find rock gardens wherever you find dreams.
Here’s 5 quick tips to get you started on the right path to your unique rock garden!
QUICK TIP #1
Come up with an idea. Not just any idea! Dream, visualize, let your mind float. Imagine colors and pathways – will yours be a curvy casual path of pea gravel or flagstone and Irish moss? And, where will it take you?
Is it sunny, shady or a little bit of both in your garden? Is there a place to sit and dream or just a quaint path to meander down?
QUICK TIP #2
Write it all down. Even if it’s over the top – you can trim later!
Mark out your rocks, ideal boulder sizes and where they’re going to go. Jot down your dream plants, seating and location.
QUICK TIP #3
Know your terrain so you can shape it.
If your rock garden is on a flat piece of land, start on the inside and work your way out. Add height! Build up small mounds of dirt in different places to add some dimension to your rock garden.
You could also set a larger rock on top of smaller ones and fill in the cracks with complimentary plants.
If your rock garden is sloped, start at the bottom and work your way up. As you put each rock or boulder in place, make sure that it’s stable because this is your foundation.
Also, make certain that that your rocks at the top angle down so any rain will naturally roll off the rocks and onto the garden below.

Plant in the early spring or autumn and choose plants that are adapted to your particular climate. Your plants are the last piece of the puzzle! Get your rocks in place as well as your paths, streams or waterfalls first.
