The traditional barbecue has always been a family favorite and is still one of the most popular entertaining methods for most people. But now, in the 21st century, the traditional barbecue is being expanded to allow a wider range of cooking styles including real gourmet meals. Enter the outdoor kitchen grills.
These outdoor patio kitchens, as they are sometimes called, can add a real spark to your entertaining. No longer is it necessary to prepare and store food indoors when, with one of these, it can be done right outside where the action is. They can provide everything that your indoor kitchen has – stove, refrigerator, grill, hot plates etc and there is one major added benefit. Your indoor kitchen stays clean!
What is involved in building outdoor kitchens? Before you consider rushing out and buying one there is a lot to consider. You will find there are lots of outdoor kitchen ideas but pre-planning is probably the most important step to ensure you finish with exactly what you want.
Here are some tips on things you should take into account when planning your outdoor kitchen
PLANNING: What type of cooking do you want to do in this area, simple barbecues or gourmet cooking? The more sophisticating the cooking, the more sophisticated and expensive is the equipment.
Will you be eating outside or inside? If you intend eating outside then you will need a tables and seating.
Will you be catering for small groups e.g. family or for large parties? Ensure your kitchen is big enough and that there is plenty of room left for socializing.
Will you want to use the outdoor kitchen all year round or only in the warmer months? In other words will a roof or canopy be required?
Do you want the outdoor kitchen to be a permanent structure or something that can be moved?
LOCATION: Plan your outdoor kitchen to be close to your house to make access to the house easy.
Take note of the wind direction. The cooking area should be located to ensure smoke and odors are not blown indoors nor into the eating area.
If the area is to be covered ensure there is means for smoke to escape.
BUDGET: Know your budget before you begin and do your sums, but stick to your budget. The costs of building an outdoor kitchen can easily escalate if you are not careful.
COUNCIL PERMITS: Check with your local council or municipality authority about which permits are required. You may be running electricity and water to the cooking area plus building new structures. It is important that all by-laws are adhered to.
Here are some features to incorporate into your outdoor kitchen plan that can help reduce the impact on the environment.
Consider using solar lights.
If building new structures, use natural materials like stone, adobe or cob.
Although not perfect, consider cooking with charcoal rather than gas. Alternatively a solar cooker could be incorporated.
If you will be installing a sink, run the water onto the garden (check with the authorities first to ensure this is allowable) for some free irrigation.
How to build an outdoor kitchen is much like building an indoor kitchen but a little less complicated. If you follow these simple guidelines and plan properly to start with, then you can be assured that the final product will provide you with years of great entertaining and fond memories. Plus it will add appeal and value to your home.
