Death is an inevitable destination for every human being in this planet. It is such an agonizing experience for the family and friends who are left behind.
A funeral is done before a burial or cremation, to honor the dead person. Several cultures have different rites for the death of a loved one. Oftentimes, the funeral will be done according to the dead person’s religious conviction, or according to the culture of the place where he has lived.
A Visitation ceremony, a memorial service and then either the cremation or burial of the body are the three stages a normal funeral is split into.
During the visitation or wake period, the dead who is placed in a coffin can be viewed by family and friends. More often than not, this visitation also becomes a form of gathering for families and friends who have been apart for a while, as this is the moment that they can converge and talk about the death. This occassion is also where the [living’surviving] family members can show photographs of the deceased when he was still alive. Depending on the dead person’s family, the viewing can last from 2 days up to a week or may be longer.
It is at this occassion that the visitors can sign in a guest book to inidicate their presence. Amidst the wake period, scheduled religious services may be done. Generally, a mass is done at the end of the visitation period.
The Memorial service then follows the Visitation ceremony. This is generally held in the church or funeral home. Church heads usually conduct the service. For Catholics, a priest leads the mass. It is also during this moment where chosen friends and family members can give their eulogy, citing good traits and happy moments of the deceased while he was still living.
After the funeral service, the casket is closed, and it will now be brought to the ground where the burial will take place or to the crematory where the body will be cremated. Sometimes, the urn containing the dead’s cremains is also buried in a cemetery. In some practices, a final meal or get-together is held in a certain location right after the interment.
Holding a memorial service for a loved one is a manner of tradition that has been carried out for many years and should be performed with both love and respect in honour of the deceased.
