How to Clean a New Apartment Before Moving In by Jeremy Smith
When moving into a new apartment, the rental unit is not always clean and ready for the next tenant. Some of the belongings from those who lived there before may have been left behind. Dirt, old spills and a ring in the bathtub are signs that the apartment needs a thorough cleaning before the new person moves into the apartment. Rather than move in as is, the new tenant should clean and disinfect all rooms first if it has not been done by the landlord.
Cleaning Supplies
Cleaning supplies for the job include paper towels, trash bags, sponges, scrubbers, liquid soap, a bucket, disinfectant, air freshener, all-purpose cleaner and special cleaning solutions for glass, tile and carpet. A broom, dustpan and mop are useful for bare floors. These can be bought from the local discount cleaning supplies store, as well. Wear rubber gloves to protect the hands from exposure to chemicals and prevent wrinkles from long contact with water. A vacuum cleaner is helpful if one is available.
Kitchen
The kitchen is usually the easiest place to start, and usually needs the most work. Empty out the refrigerator and freezer, then wipe them down with a sponge in hot soapy water. Rinse with water until it is clear of dirt streaks and soap bubbles. Clean the range with grease-cutting formula spray, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Wipe down the oven, countertops and cabinets, rinsing the sponge and scrubbers as often as needed. If the floor is made of tile, it should be swept. Special floor cleaner or a mild liquid soap with hot water can be used with a mop and bucket for a clean shine. Allow the floor to dry before letting anyone walk on it to avoid tracks, scuffs and streaks.
Bathroom
Use tile cleaner and scrubbers to eliminate any mold, mildew and rings in the shower or tub, sink and toilet. The shower curtain and rubber bath mat should also be replaced. These can be purchased at the same store as the discount cleaning supplies. Sweep and mop or vacuum the floor and sanitize the countertops. Clean the mirrors with glass cleaner. Spray disinfectant on all surfaces following the manufacturer’s instructions.
Living Areas
Sanitize the windows and window ledges. Clean the floors last, doing one room or hallway at a time. Sweep all bare floors first, then mop. Dirty carpets can be cleaned with stain remover or spray cleanser and deodorizer before vacuuming.
After all rooms have been cleaned and disinfected as necessary, use an air freshener to make the new apartment smell fresh. The apartment should now be in move-in condition and ready for the new tenant.
