VisitBritain Pulls Out Of Fledgling Markets
It was only a couple of weeks ago that the British tourism minister was talking up Britain’s need to think beyond the 2012 Olympic year and ensure the longterm performance of the UK as a tourist market. But this week, VisitBritain has announced that they will be greatly reducing their operations, following the pattern set out by just about every other industry in the UK at the moment: announce crippling cuts and job losses a week or so after a minister insists that you could be doing more. VisitBritain is to pull out from 14 overseas markets, including South Africa, New Zealand, Korea and Mexico. Job losses of 30% are expected, with promotion left to 21 markets. In Autumn, VisitBritain’s budget was cut by 34%, making these measures essential.
The hope is that, unprompted, the Diamond Jubilee, royal wedding, and London Olympics will compensate for the few who outright forget the UK and head on Holidays to Barbados alternatively. The strategy is regrettable, but more or less the only thing that could be done. The 21 countries account for 80% of foreign tourist income. But this is precisely the brand of narrow, short term thinking that Parliament was warning against. What is happening in the UK beyond 2012? Nothing much. Meanwhile, Tourism is diversifying, with people heading on Dubai Holidays and other paradises that offer something new and equally matured.
The cuts aren’t just about overseas spending either: the flagship Regent Street visitor centre will go too. This creates a vacuum of information for tourists visiting the UK, and how does VisitBritain plan to fill it? Smartphone apps. The degree to which this chases a bandwagon is quite pathetic. The issues with doing this shouldn’t need to be pointed out: it requires not only a tech-savvy demographic, but the kind of mobile infrastructure that everywhere in the world patently doesn’t have yet (data charges abroad aren’t a lot of fun). VisitBritain’s goals are unrealistic. The only miracle that can save them now is a world full of people somehow taking their Tropical Sky Weddings Abroad to Britain, just because the world’s most infamous History of Arts students are tying the knot? Dream on Sire.
