Selecting the Best Material for Kitchen Countertops by Rick Jelliffe
While decorating a kitchen the most common dilemma people face is deciding the material for countertop. It is an important decision because the material should be strong, durable and scratch free to withstand constant activity that happens around the kitchen. Besides it has to bear the weight of heavy things and other things kept on it. Usually, granite and marble have been popular choices for countertops but now new materials like quartz, bio-glass, formica, corian and ceramic tiles are also used.
Let’s see the pros and cons of these materials. Although formica kitchen countertops are easy to maintain and clean, you cannot keep hot material on its surface. They will wilt under the heat. Many older apartments have countertops made of ceramic tiles because they are stain resistant and durable. However, the grouts easily gather dirt and need to be frequently cleaned. Tiles come in different styles and varieties and differ in quality. Lesser quality tiles are prone to breaking if heavy things are kept on its surface. Some tiles are slippery and other granular. But their finish is not as elegant as marble or granite countertops.
Corian surfaces come in many designs and the sink and countertop can be seamlessly integrated to create an illusion of a single surface. It is stain resistant but requires regular cleaning of it will become susceptible to mould. Granite and marble countertops on the other hand have stood the test of time and still are the more preferred materials. Granite, by definition, is an igneous rock with 20 per cent quartz, made by cooling of magma. It is hard, durable and a lot of skill is required to cut it. It comes in different colours (the colour is usually determined by the amount of quartz and mica in it as well as the rate of cooling of magma to form the stone). Being, natural, resistant to wear and tear, and rigid, granite is a material of choice for kitchens and bathroom. You can cut on it without the fear of damaging the granite countertop. It is also known for its elegant looks.
