Chris Young – Neon by Mona Geller
The American country music artist Chris Young was born June 12, 1985 in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. In 2006, he was declared the winner of the television program Nashville Star, a singing competition which aired on the USA Network. After winning, he was signed to RCA Records Nashville. On October 3, 2006, he released his self-titled debut album. The album produced two chart singles for Young on the Billboard Hot Country Songs charts: “Drinkin’ Me Lonely” and “You’re Gonna Love Me”, which respectively reached No. 42 and No. 48. He released his second studio album “The Man I Want to Be” on September 1, 2009. The lead-off single, “Voices”, was released in May 2008, and peaked at number 37 on the Hot Country Songs chart, becoming Young’s first Top 40 country hit.
His third studio album “Neon” was released on July 12, 2011. The album showcases Chris Young’s rich & unmistakable voice that has become a favorite in country music. Chris co-wrote 7 out of the 10 tracks and his hard work is definitely evident on his new album. With the success of “Tomorrow”, the album has already gotten a good response. All ten tracks on “Neon” are made to be singles and hit singles at that. The CD starts with “I Can Take It From There,” a song that takes us back to “Gettin’ You Home” territory with the right mix of sophistication and sexiness. “Lost” is another upbeat tune that shows off Chris’ deep vocals and fun as well as romantic side. His fun, upbeat personality shines on “Save Water, Drink Beer” & “Lost” while “Old Things New” and “Flashlight” expresses his softer side as the songs contains personal meaning to him. “She’s Got This Thing About Her” is a love song for the woman in his life. He tells everyone about how amazing she is. He thinks about her all the time. He can’t wait until she gets back from wherever she is.
The title track, “Neon,” is the most country of the tracks with that haunting steel guitar and images of a smoky honky tonk with Johnny Lee on the jukebox. It has a back-in-the-day country feel & sound to it, but is presented with a modern day appeal that will be refreshing to hear on country radio. The song is nearly as strong, a honky-tonk ballad that uses some creative imagery to explain the seductive draw of a bar. Young brings an authentic sense of resignation to the song as he sighs, “The light at the end of this tunnel is neon.” Overall, “Neon” is a great album with great potential.
