Keeping Cool With Room Air Conditioners
When the heat of summer hits, room air conditioners help to keep occupants cool regardless of the temperatures outside. These little heat pumps remove the heat from the area in order to lower the temperature and humidity and make it more comfortable. When wanting to beat the heat of summer, these devices offer an affordable yet effective way to keep cool.
The window units of today are far more efficient than the early units that were sold. Some have an energy efficiency rating that can match or beat a central cooling unit. Since the cold air is blown directly into the home without using ducts, there is less chance of loss of cooling from the unit.
It is common today to find units up to 12000 BTU in size that operate using standard household current. There is no longer a need to run a heavy duty 220 volt circuit to the area where the unit is to be installed. The 12000 BTU unit is large enough to cool most large rooms in a home, up to 500 square feet. Smaller units are also available. The 5000 BTU unit is inexpensive and sufficient for cooling most modern bedrooms. If the home is poorly insulated, larger units are sometimes required to provide the required cooling capacity.
Most of these units are designed to be installed in a window. The most common is designed for vertical opening windows, but special units designed for horizontal sliders are also available. Units are also available for a more permanent installation through the wall that allow the user to have the great cooling effect without blocking the window.
Units have seen many improvements over the years. In addition to becoming more energy efficient, they are also much quieter than units of years past were. No longer must the home occupant decide between being able to hear the television and staying cool.
In areas where high humidity is a problem, these units can help to reduce the moisture in the air. As air from the home is moved over the cooled coils, the water condenses and drips to a tray at the bottom of the unit. This moisture evaporates outside the home and in some units helps to increase energy efficiency. In extremely humid areas, the water is allowed to drain away harmlessly.
Providing these units for the elderly can help to prevent heat related illness. Elderly should be reminded that on extremely hot days the use of a fan along can be counterproductive and increase dehydration. Once the temperatures are above body temperature, the individual will need some form of cooling in the home, such as that provided by window units.
For zonal cooling, consider room air conditioners. They work well to keep individual rooms in the home cool instead of the entire home. A unit could be installed in bedrooms or in living areas. The entire home may be cooled by using several units strategically located. Portable fans can be used to move the cooled air to areas out of reach of the unit.
